Follow the leader and pledge to save water and money! – Oct. 1, 2011
Broward Water Partnership offers rebates, showerheads and aerators

Patti Anton, of Dania Beach is the first person to take the pledge to conserve water!

Anton is an elementary school teacher in Broward County and has her own programs in place to help her students learn about the importance of water conservation. She was thrilled to tell her students about the program. “They were so excited. We had a great discussion about water conservation. It only takes a small effort from everyone to make a big impact on the world,“ she explained.

The pledge is part of the Broward Water Partnership’s Conservation Pays program. The Program is offering toilet rebates for high efficiency models and encourages residents within the service areas of the 16 participating municipalities and water utilities to take the conservation pledge. Residents who pledge agree to reduce the amount of water they use from their daily routines. Better still, they save money while saving water.

“When I came across the incentive and pledge program, I didn’t think twice about it,” Anton said. “The website is so user friendly. It took just a few minutes to sign up and pledge. I hope everyone does their part and joins me in pledging to save our water.”

Broward residents can check their eligibility for a rebate to replace their current water-guzzling toilet with a WaterSense® certified, High-Efficiency Toilet (a HET uses 1.28 gallons per flush or less.) Rebates must be pre-approved, are limited in quantity, and are available on a first-come, first-served basis. Only one rebate per qualifying household will be authorized. Other restrictions apply.

Low flow showerheads and faucet aerators are also available for free while supplies last.

Reducing Broward County’s water use by 10 percent would save 30 million gallons of water per day over the next 20 years. With toilets accounting for up to 35 percent of household water consumption, swapping out your old toilet for an HET model can nearly double your savings. Simply put. Water conservation pays for the environment and for homeowners, too.

High-tech toilets fight stigma of poor predecessors – Sept. 30, 2011, Sun-Sentinel
New models deliver performance but must overcome reputation

Set aside breakfast for a moment and consider the domestic catastrophes inflicted by the first generation of low-flow toilets.

During the primitive era of that little-loved bathroom fixture, models rushed out by manufacturers to meet new federal standards were, by all accounts, little better than what would go into them. Horrified homeowners refused to replace aged fixtures with toilets that would require multiple flushes to clear the bowl, and many made runs across the Canadian border to buy ones that would deliver decisive, Niagara-like blasts of water…Read more.

Broward cities to offer rebates for high-efficiancy toilets – Sept. 29, 2011, Sun-Sentinel

An essential fixture in the environmentally perfect home: The high-efficiency toilet.

Cities throughout Broward County are offering rebates of up to $100 for replacing your toilet with one bearing the WaterSense label. These toilets use 20 percent less water than standard ones, with technology that allows for a single flush to be sufficient.

Like old cars that guzzle gas, the aged toilets in many older buildings use a tremendous amount of water. That thunderous, basso-profundo flush can use five to seven gallons. Although newer models are much more miserly, a high-efficiency toilet uses the least water, 1.28 gallons or less… Read more.
